Seth Lakeman, Mercury Prize nominated for ‘Kitty Jay’, to play at The Apex, in Bury St Edmunds, in February

A renowned multi-instrumentalist will be visiting a Suffolk town in February as part of a 20th anniversary tour for his Mercury Prize nominated album.

Seth Lakeman received the award nomination in 2005 for ‘Kitty Jay’, which catapulted him into the mainstream.

He will be bringing his celebration of the album to The Apex, in Bury St Edmunds, on February 23.

The album was inspired by the legends and stories of Dartmoor, where Seth grew up, and it was procuded by his brother Sean in his home kitchen, at a cost of just £300.

A solo performance of the eponymous track live on television drew unanimous praise from critics and started a journey which has spawned 11 further albums, BBC Radio 2 playisted singles, world tours and a clutch of awards.

At the time of his shortlisting for the Mercury Prize, The Guardian stated it was ‘the biggest surprise’ given the raft of well-known pop artists he was up against, including Coldplay, Kaiser Chiefs, Maximo Park and Hard-Fi.

That year’s award was won by Antony and the Johnsons for ‘I Am A Bird Now.’
