Art exhibitions resume at Chappel Galleries following three-month closure due to coronavirus lockdown

An art gallery in Chappel has reopened after being closed for three months during the coronavirus lockdown.

Edna Battye, owner of Chappel Galleries, said the venue’s spacious nature meant social distancing could be conducted relatively easily.

“We have a lot of space here, so it hasn’t been a problem,” she said. “People can come in, walk around four rooms in the gallery, and then exit through the sculpture gardens to the car park.”

Exhibitions currently being showcased at the gallery in Colchester Road, which focuses on contemporary fine art, include a series of watercolour paintings depicting coastal scenes by Edna’s husband, Wladyslaw Mirecki, along with a range of bold sculptures crafted by Jonathan Clarke.

Mrs Battye said her husband enjoyed focusing on paintings of coastal scenes as they could help to uplift people’s moods.

The exhibition is being staged until Sunday, July 19.
