Man charged with robbery after hold-up at Newmarket petrol station





A 48-year-old man has been charged following an armed robbery at a Newmarket petrol station last month.

David McGowan, of Tutte Gardens, Exning Road in Newmarket, was charged with robbery, possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear or violence, and possession of a kitchen knife.

He appeared before magistrates in Ipswich on Saturday when he was remanded to appear at Ipswich Crown Court on Monday January 29.

McGowan had been arrested on December 28 on suspicion of robbery and taken to Bury St Edmunds Police investigation centre where he was later charged.

Police were alerted to the incident at 7.15pm on Tuesday December 12, when a man had walked out of the Shell petrol station in the High Street, having stolen cash and cigarettes.

Officers are still keen to get for any doorbell or CCTV footage from between 6.30pm and 8pm on December in the area of Tutte Gardens, Hamilton Road, Valley Way, Rowley Drive and Falmouth Avenue. Anyone contacting police should quote crime reference 37/71656/23.
