Thetford heritage consultation under way as Breckland Council looks to review town’s conservation area

Thetford residents are being asked their views on protecting the town’s heritage as Breckland Council looks to review the town’s conservation area.

The public consultation, the council says, will help to highlight areas to improve and update planning policies for the future.

This follows Breckland councillor Terry Jermy saying he felt the historic market town’s rich history was under threat due to ‘bad management and neglect’ last month.

Councillor Sarah Suggitt, the council’s deputy leader and executive member for strategic and operational planning, said: “At Breckland Council we are passionate about the preservation and enhancement of our built heritage.

“We want to hear the views of members of the public so that our approach to protecting and enhancing Thetford’s Conservation Area truly reflects their needs and wishes.

“I urge everyone to visit our website, read the draft appraisal, and let us know what they think.”

Breckland Council are currently updating their appraisal of the town’s conservation area in partnership with Thetford Town Council.

This will update the previous appraisal to reflect how the town has changed and will also set out an approach to preserve and enhance the area through the careful management of development.

It will also provide guidance for the owners of properties within the conservation area on how they can safeguard and enhance the built heritage of the town.
