Suffolk’s Gina Long MBE who founded Gee Wizz Charitable Foundation given award from Sarcoma UK at 10 Downing Street

A well-known fundraiser from Suffolk has been given an award in recognition of the charity work she has done since her daughter was diagnosed with cancer.

Gina Long MBE, was presented with the Roger Wilson Inspiration of the Year Award in the Shining Star Awards at 10 Downing Street – run by Sarcoma UK.

The fundraiser became involved with the charity’s work after her daughter Ali was diagnosed with myxoid liposarcoma in 2013.

Gina, who became Sarcoma UK’s first UK ambassador, and sits on the the charity’s Genomics Development Board, said: “When I heard that I was to receive this award, I was deeply honoured.

“These people are all totally inspiring. I’ve been a fundraiser for 45 years and have been so lucky to meet so many amazing people.

“I knew nothing about sarcoma. In all the charities I’ve been lucky enough to work with, what you see at Sarcoma UK is what you get. You all make a difference.”

Sarcomas are uncommon cancers that can affect any part of the body, on the inside or outside, including the muscle, bone, tendons, blood vessels and fatty tissues.

There are around 100 different sub-types of sarcoma cancer.

Gina’s GeeWizz charitable foundation closed earlier this year, after it raised more than £2 million to help children and young people across Suffolk.
