DOUBLE CHARTER CELEBRATIONS FOR STOWMARKET CLUBS
The two Rotary clubs in Stowmarket held a joint
Charter Celebration Dinner recently at the town‘s Cedars Hotel, where both
clubs regularly meet. The initiative for the evening came from Gipping Valley,
the younger of the clubs, who wanted to mark the fifth anniversary of the
granting of their charter. However, since the same month also marked the 46th
anniversary of the Stowmarket club, it was decided to hold the joint event to
enhance the close links enjoyed by the two clubs, which often work in
partnership. The guest speaker was Mike Cowan, the former Yorkshire
and England cricketer, who for several years opened the bowling for his county
with the great Freddie Trueman. Mike, who is a long-standing member of
Doncaster Rotary Club and has been awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship, gave his
audience a highly entertaining account of his life and times, both in Rotary
and as a professional sportsman. The picture shows Mike Cowan (centre) flanked by the
two club presidents, Barry Jacobs of Stowmarket (left) and Arnie Bennett of
Gipping Valley. For further information contact: Tony Pickering, Publicity Officer, Rotary Club of
